| The St Catherine’s Lifeboat was paged at 22.47 on Thursday night following two reports of a flare sighted in St Catherine’s Bay. The lifeboat was launched in just over 10 minutes into a force 6 south Easterly wind, which made for a very difficult launch. The Lifeboat then conducted a slow search from Anne Port Bay round to Gorey Castle and then back to St Catherine Breakwater before completing a shore search back to the Lifeboat station. During the search the Lifeboat fired an illuminating flare which enabled the crew to see the whole of the area of the report. The Lifeboat was stood down at midnight after an hour’s search of the bay and the lifeboat was recovered back onto its trailer under very difficult conditions due to a heavy surf. From the wind direction it is now thought that the flare was probably fired from the shore in the area of Archirondel tower. |
